Faial
Marina life, Capelinhos landscapes, sharks, and sailing.

Faial is called the Blue Island — a name earned by the waves of hydrangeas that line every road in summer, spilling over stone walls and down clifftops to the sea. Its most dramatic landmark is the Capelinhos volcano on the island's western tip, a raw and otherworldly promontory that emerged from the ocean in 1957 and 1958, adding a full square kilometre of new land and burying a lighthouse to its lantern room in ash and lava cinder. The Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre — built partially underground into the volcanic soil — tells the full story of the eruption and the thousands of Faial islanders who emigrated to the United States and Canada in the years that followed. The island's caldera, the Caldeira do Faial, is a five-kilometre-wide depression filled with ancient woodland and endemic plants, and the rim walk offers extraordinary views down into the crater and across to Pico on clear days. The marina at Horta is legendary among ocean sailors and home to Peter's Café Sport, one of the most celebrated waterside bars in the sailing world, its walls plastered with painted crests left by yachts from every nation. Add shark diving, dolphin watching, sailing excursions, and day trips across the short channel to Pico, and Faial delivers the full breadth of Azorean adventure.
Best time to visit: June to September brings the hydrangea bloom in full force, the calmest seas for diving and sailing, and the best visibility for the Caldeira rim walk.
