São Miguel

The Green Island. Lakes, hot springs, and the biggest choice of tours.

Sete Cidades twin crater lakes viewed from a Sao Miguel viewpoint

São Miguel is the largest of the nine Azores islands and the one that most visitors fall in love with on first arrival. At its heart lie the Sete Cidades twin crater lakes — one deep blue, one vivid green — enclosed by laurisilva forest and accessible from panoramic viewpoints that have appeared on every travel list for a decade. Head east and you reach Furnas, a geothermal valley where hot springs rise to the surface, cozido stews are slow-cooked underground, and the Terra Nostra botanical garden offers an afternoon of hydrangeas and thermal bathing. The island's interior rises around Lagoa do Fogo, a pristine crater lake reached by a short rewarding trail with sweeping views and almost no crowds. On the coast, Ponta Delgada is a working city of black-and-white cobbled streets and excellent harbour-front restaurants, perfectly placed for whale watching trips year-round. The Gorreana tea plantation — the only working tea estate in Europe — sits on the island's north ridge and opens its doors to visitors every day. São Miguel rewards every kind of traveller: the active explorer, the curious foodie, the wildlife-seeker, and anyone who simply wants to stand at the edge of a caldera and feel very small.

Best time to visit: April to October offers the warmest temperatures and calmest seas, with May through September being peak season for whale watching and outdoor activities.

Frequently asked questions about São Miguel

What are the best things to do in São Miguel?
Top experiences include a guided tour of the Sete Cidades crater lakes, a dip in the Furnas thermal baths at Terra Nostra, whale and dolphin watching from Ponta Delgada, and a hike to Lagoa do Fogo. A jeep tour of the island's interior combines several highlights in one day.
How do I get to Sete Cidades from Ponta Delgada?
Sete Cidades is about 25 km west of Ponta Delgada. The easiest option is joining a guided tour that includes transport and a local expert. You can also rent a car and drive to the Vista do Rei and Boca do Inferno viewpoints, which are unmissable.
Is whale watching available year-round in São Miguel?
Yes. The Azores is one of the world's premier whale-watching destinations, and São Miguel offers trips throughout the year. Resident sperm whales are present year-round; blue and fin whales pass through in spring. Most tours depart from Ponta Delgada marina.
How many days do I need to see São Miguel properly?
We recommend at least four nights to cover the highlights: Sete Cidades, Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo, and a whale-watching trip. A full week lets you explore the eastern coast, the Gorreana tea plantation, Caldeira Velha, and smaller villages at a relaxed pace.
Should I book activities in advance?
Whale watching and popular guided tours fill up quickly in peak season (June–September). Booking at least a few days ahead is strongly advised. For group visits or during public holidays, earlier booking is always the safest approach.
